Tanzania’s national exams are administered by NECTA, a government organization created by law in 1973. Following Mainland Tanzania’s withdrawal from the East African Examinations Council in 1971, the Curriculum and Examinations Section of the Ministry of Education conducted all national exams prior to 1973. NECTA assumed this role after it was founded, but curriculum-related matters were still managed by the Ministry of Education and the University College, Dar es Salaam, until the Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD), another independent organization, was founded in 1975 and renamed the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) in 1993.

The initial workers of NECTA were hired between 1972 and 1976, including Mr. P. P. Gandye, who was hired in 1972 and made Executive Secretary in 1994. Particularly when NECTA’s offices were moved from the Ministry of Education’s headquarters to the present location in Kijitonyama, near Mwenge, hiring for more staff persisted. The company currently employs over 350 people.

Subjects covered in CSEE 2025

Eligibility for sitting CSEE and receiving results
